World Series

image: screenshot from Black Tomato

Black Tomato is one of my favourite travel sites, it makes me dream of adventures I can't afford in far off lands. They've just updated their site, which looks decidedly spiffy, and they've added the above beautiful image to help you decide where you would like to go next. This gorgeous image (as inspiring as the daydreams it evokes) reminded me of this brilliant fabric map created by the staff at Spoonflower:

World maps are such beautiful things, how better to start off daydreams than putting one of these on your wall. Perfect for a child's room.

Colour in Brixton: Ohema Ohene

I have long walked through the markets in Brixton and admired the brilliant fabrics that remind me of my travels through West Africa over 13 years ago.  I don't need to tell you about the colour of Brixton, even those who haven't been here know about the colours that exist in this melting pot of cultures and languages, all stirred in with a raw edge of urban Britishness.

That is why I'd like to share Ohema Ohene, a brand and boutique on Atlantic road created in 2008 by British born designer Abenaa Pokuaa. Ohema Ohene means Queen & King in the Ghanaian language of Twi, a reference to Pokuaa's Ghanaian heritage.

The clothes and accessories blend a perfect balance of western lines and cuts, with vibrant African fabrics (some originally Ghanaian, others inspired by Ghana and designed by Pokuaa). What sets this brand apart from many other fashion ranges I see in any kind of independent shop, is the amazing quality of finish achieved by the team who sew each piece. The clothing of course begins with the vision, the fabric, the design, but it's the lining, the stitching, the precision that can't be hidden when looking at the clothes up close. I highly recommend you take a trip if you ever find yourself down Atlantic Road, these are some amazing value pieces, with edge and soul, a killer combination.
